A little love letter to the perfect black summer dress today! This has well and truly been the dress that has seen me through the hot and humid days of summer 2020 – it’s been my most reached for, most worn, and most washed piece of the last few weeks. It’s such a beautiful light/breezy material in a simple boxy shape (that doesn’t seem like much to the naked eye)…
It’s just the most incredible dress that I think would slot nicely into anyone’s summer wardrobe. It’s by And Other Stories and it will definitely be the piece that stands out to me when I look back at this summer. It’s a chic black T-shirt style dress with beautiful buttons all up the front. Usually, I would stay clear from this type of dress as I don’t find them to be flattering on me, but the floaty material of this one really makes it seem effortless and way more expensive than it is (it actually looks just like this Mansur Gavriel one but for a fraction of the price).
As it’s quite a shapeless dress, I’ve been styling it with cropped pieces that balance out the lack of structure a little bit and make it feel more like an outfit and less like a ‘sack style’ dress. I love how it looks with a cropped trench style jacket (this one was from Weekday a while ago but I’ll link similar options below), and some chunky sandals. Teamed with a little basket bag, it feels like my ideal ‘minimal summer’ look that’s put-together but requires very little thought to throw on…
I think that’s what I love most about this dress! It’s just very very easy to style, and I feel like we all need pieces like that to rely on at the moment. I’ve also been wearing it with cardigans and cropped jumpers on cooler days, and it looks lovely with some cream plimsole style shoes too. I also think it would look great worn open over a bikini as a beach cover up (a girl can dream)…
I don’t have any holidays abroad planned anytime soon but this would definitely be a piece I would take with me. Whether it’s dressed up for the evening with some strappy sandals, or the perfect throw on for the airport with a sweater worn over the top – this dress pretty much has all bases covered.
It still seems to be in stock in all sizes if you’re thinking of investing – I got a small and it’s nicely oversized on me for reference. It also comes in a vibrant blue style print if you’re more on the colourful side! I also noticed that And Other Stories do a very similar (but shorter) version if you’re after something with a little less material…
