I found this jumper in Cow Manchester when I first moved here after living at home for a short while post university. It was one of those pieces that felt like it ‘found me’ in a way. It was neatly folded up on the top of a display table and I couldn’t believe that it hadn’t been snapped up already. I think that’s the magic of vintage, when you find a these rare/one off pieces, it feels a little bit like wardrobe fate…
I’m quite sentimental when it comes to vintage. It’s generally a much more rewarding way to shop, and the vintage pieces I own always end up being the ones I hold onto the longest. This jumper has such a Sixties/Seventies feel to it – year after year I dig it out of hibernation and it still feels like a ‘high end piece’ that I might stumble across when browsing the likes of Matches or Net a Porter. I think it’s the rich/rusty orange tones that make it feel so luxurious. The reality being that it cost me around thirty english pounds…
It’s also super soft and none irritating on the skin which can be hard to come across with vintage knitwear! I prefer to shop knitwear IRL if I can – it’s much easier when you can try pieces on and get a feel for how you’d style them. If you’re shopping for vintage knitwear online then always check the description or drop the seller a message to see whether you’re about to invest in a giant ball of sandpaper – I’ve made the mistake of falling for a pretty design and then doing everything I can to soften the material so that I can wear it without wanting to scratch my skin off. Believe me, no knitwear is worth the hassle…
I love statement jumpers like this because they really perk up an otherwise boring outfit. I love wearing tailored trousers and boots at this time of year – it’s what makes me feel most comfortable and it starts to become a bit of a uniform. An interesting jumper just makes everything look a bit more intentional and polished. Add a cute bag and it almost appears as though I spent more than five minutes considering my outfit. Winter dressing is best kept cosy and none stressful…
