Some film snaps from another slow weekend in Manchester! Sam and I try and head out for a walk around the city at least once a week so that we don’t feel completely disconnected from it. It’s easy to head for a park or a scenic route but I really don’t want to forget why we moved to a city and all of the things I enjoy about city life. I can’t wait until Manchester feels more vibrant again, but for now, strolling around the (mostly) empty streets with a takeaway coffee in hand is just the tonic…
I’ve been trying to make an effort to snap more of the mundane moments over the past year – I think we sometimes feel tricked into only documenting the super happy/extravagant moments in our lives, and I really want to take stock in some of the slower (but equally as meaningful) ones. It’s the reason I’m a big fan of a little point and shoot film camera! They really encourage me to just snap away and require minimal setting up. I find that I look at things in a whole new way when I’m carrying a film camera with me. It encourages me to look for those little moments of magic that seem to slip away in an instant if you’re not quick…
There’s nothing monumental about any of these images – they are just some portraits we took on another very forgettable stroll during lockdown. I don’t particularly feel any attachment to them, I’m not bursting to get them framed…
And yet one day in the future, they might just possess a level of significance to me that I won’t be prepared for until I dig them out of a dusty old box. Retrospect is incredibly powerful like that. It’s the reason I take photographs of everything and anything as I move through the world. Photographs can teach you things as well as being memories to decorate a wall space with. I don’t quite know what I’m taking away from the whole lockdown experience, but I know it will become clearer as time goes on and we get back to living a more normal existence again. I hope I look back at some of the images I’ve taken during this time and remember how we tried to make the best of it. Even on those days when we weren’t feeling our best…
